We received some general questions from an Anonymous poster and felt everyone may benefit from the answers. So here they are:
Questions: How many council members make up the City Council? What is the duration of a term of service? What are the, or are there, term limits? Will a background check be performed on all candidates? Must a council member be a homeowner in Providence Village? Must a council member be a resident of PV?
The June 19th election will determine a mayor and 5 aldermen for the Providence Village Town Council.
According to Local Government Code 22.34c, "If the municipality is not divided into wards, the governing body by ordinance may determine the number and the manner of deciding which aldermen elected at the initial election for officers serve for one year and which serve for two years." Elected town council members determine their town's term limit ordinances as well.
Candidates check a box on their filing applications stating they have not been convicted of a felony. Denton County and the Texas Secretary of State's Office do not perform background checks or verify the accuracy of the candidates' statements unless the statements are challenged.
It is not required to be a homeowner within Providence to serve on the Town Council but candidates must reside here.
Thanks for asking - please include your name and street in an email to PVcandidateforum@gmail.com if you'd like your questions asked at the June 5th forum.
